AZO Test

AZO Test for Textiles and Leather Products

Azo dyes are a class of synthetic dyes commonly used in textiles and leather products. Some azo dyes may decompose under certain conditions to produce carcinogenic aromatic amines, posing potential health risks to humans.

To protect consumer health, the EU and other regions have banned the use of azo dyes that can decompose to produce specific aromatic amines in textiles and leather products.

Regulatory Requirements

EU Regulations

Article 43 of Annex 17 of the EU REACH regulation explicitly prohibits the use of azo dyes that can decompose and produce aromatic amines at concentrations exceeding 30mg/kg in textiles and leather products that come into long-term contact with human skin.

China Standards

GB 18401-2010 "National Basic Safety Technical Specification for Textile Products" specifies the limit requirements for the prohibition of azo dyes in textiles, which is consistent with EU standards.

The list of banned aromatic amines includes 24 carcinogenic aromatic amines, which must not exceed a concentration of 30mg/kg in textiles and leather products.

Testing Methods

Sample Pretreatment

Sample pretreatment involves cutting the sample into small pieces and extracting it with solvents such as methanol to simulate the dye decomposition process under human sweating conditions.

GC-MS Analysis

GC-MS analysis is used to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the aromatic amines in the extracted liquid.

LC-MS/MS Analysis

For certain aromatic amines that are difficult to vaporize, LC-MS/MS analysis is used for analysis.

Result Determination

The detection results are compared with the limit standard of 30mg/kg, and the compliance of the product is determined.
