LFGB Testing

German Food and Consumer Goods Act

LFGB (Lebensmittel- und Bedarfsgegenständegesetz) is the German Food and Consumer Goods Act, which is the abbreviation of the German Food and Consumer Goods Act and is an important legal basis for food and consumer goods safety in Germany.

This regulation is not only applicable domestically in Germany, but it is also widely used as a reference standard for food contact material safety assessments in many other countries, particularly in Europe, where it has a high authority.

Regulatory Overview

Legal Basis

LFGB is the core food safety regulation in Germany, covering various aspects such as food, food additives, food auxiliary materials, food containers, and packaging materials.

Applicable Scope

Applicable to all materials and items in contact with food, including but not limited to tableware, kitchenware, food packaging, etc. made of plastic, metal, ceramic, glass, rubber, paper and other materials.

Testing Requirements

Requires a comprehensive safety assessment of food contact materials, including chemical testing, physical testing, and biological testing, to ensure that the materials do not contaminate food.

Regulatory Oversight

The German market supervision agency has the authority to randomly inspect products on the market, and products that do not meet the LFGB requirements may face penalties such as being taken off the shelves and fines.

Test Projects

Comprehensive Migration Testing

Assesses the total migration of materials under specific conditions, ensuring that harmful substances do not leach into food

Specific Migration Testing

Tests the migration of specific harmful substances (such as heavy metals, monomers, catalysts, etc.)

Sensory Testing

Evaluates the impact of materials on the taste, odor, and appearance of food

Heavy Metal Testing

Detects the content of lead, cadmium, mercury, and other heavy metals in materials

Product Categories

Plastic Products

Includes various plastic utensils, storage boxes, water bottles, etc., and must comply with relevant plastic regulations

Metal Products

Includes stainless steel utensils, cookware, water kettles, etc., and must be tested for heavy metal migration and corrosion resistance

Ceramic Products

Includes ceramic utensils, teaware, etc., and must be tested for lead, cadmium, and other heavy metal leaching

Glass Products

Includes glass cups, glass bottles, etc., and must be tested for chemical stability and safety

Test Standards

Main Test Standards

  • LFBG § 3 Testing the migration of food simulants
  • LFBG § 4 Testing Components of Materials and Articles
  • LFBG § 6 Testing Sensory Characteristics
  • LFBG § 8 Testing for Heavy Metal Content
