IRAM Certification Introduction

The IRAM Safety Mark is a mandatory certification mark in Argentina (excluding exempted products). Resolution 92/98, passed by Argentina in 1998, established the certification system as mandatory. Starting from December 31, 2002, regulated products must be evaluated for compliance with relevant standards by certification bodies accredited by the Argentina Accreditation Organization (OAA). The IRAM standard is mainly based on international standards (IEC and ISO). Manufacturers can attach the Argentine S mark to products that meet the standards, and product evaluation is carried out based on IEC standards plus Argentine differences or Argentine standards. In fact, the development of IRAM standards has adopted most of the provisions of IEC standards.

IRAM Certification Product Scope

The Argentine government has passed two new resolutions, Resolution 197/2004 and Resolution 198/2004. Resolution 197/2004 allows manufacturers and importers to choose different certification systems for themselves. The Argentine authorities revised the certification system at the end of 2004 and published Resolution 197/2004, which put this plan into practice. Resolution 197/2004 applies to the following products: electronic and electrical products, toys, and personal protective equipment.

Electrical applicants can choose any of the following certification methods

A. Sign certification (also known as safety sign certification)

B. Type approval

C. Batch authentication

However, in 1984/2004, there were mandatory certification requirements for some electrical and electronic products. The agreement stipulates that the following products are no longer included in the scope of mandatory certification:

  • Products with a rated current greater than 63A
  • Rated voltage less than 50V, using battery power supply
  • Rated voltage less than 50V, with external power supply (including battery operation)

Additional Requirements

Additional requirements must also be met:

  • The power supply must have valid Argentine certification
  • The product manual must state the technical parameters or model of the adapter power supply
  • The product manual must state that using non-designated power supply is dangerous

But products with rated voltage less than 50V are still subject to mandatory certification:

  • Lighting and lighting supply systems on 50V AC
  • Dichroic lamps and lamp fittings
  • Handheld electric tools
  • Electric gate starters
  • Exercise electronic muscle stimulators

Certification Document Preparation

Required Documents

1. Safety test report:

CB test report and CB certificate from Rein Germany, or IEC English version test report from Rein Germany plus Argentina's national requirements 2. Additional documents and application form

  • Authorization letter from the importer
  • Design drawings, specifications, and circuit diagrams
  • Product photos
  • Warning statements in Spanish on the nameplate
  • Spanish user manual
  • Factory inspection report from TÜV Germany
  • Certificate of conformity with Argentine IRAM 2063/2073 standard for plugs (if the plug does not comply with the Argentine IRAM standard, additional specifications and samples of the power plug must be provided)
